Social Media Armamentarium?

by Jay Deragon on 12/02/2008

Every employer expects certain levels of performance from their employees. Employers provide, or should provide, technology, specific methods and techniques which are provided to employees so than can perform to expectations. Often employers point to poor employee performance as reasons for not meeting corporate objectives. Just as often however the real reason employees cannot perform as expected is because the organizations “Armamentarium” is too low to allow employees to maximize their performance within the organization. So you ask, what is Armamentarium?

“Armamentarium” is the aggregate of technology, methods, and techniques available to people for carrying out their duties usually related to the medical field. However the term does provide connotations for business in general.

What duties you ask? Duties are defined as

  1. something that one is expected or required to do by moral or legal obligation.
  2. the binding or obligatory force of something that is morally or legally right; moral or legal obligation.
  3. an action or task required by a person’s position or occupation; function: the duties of a clergyman.
  4. the respectful and obedient conduct due a parent, superior, elder, etc.
  5. an act or expression of respect.
  6. a task or chore that a person is expected to perform:

Who Is Responsible for the Armamentarium?

All businesses perform according to the design of product/service processes and management of relationships with suppliers, employees and customer interactions. All of these activities require technology, methods and techniques aimed at maximizing the experience and the ultimate performance of the business. Management is responsible for insuring that the organization’s Armamentarium is optimized with the latest technology, methods and techniques. The latest technology, methods and techniques includes “social media” and leveraging social technology to optimize internal and external processes aimed at enhancing relations across all segments of the business operations. The restraint which does not enable “management” to optimize “all this social stuff” is a lack of knowledge and experience.

Eager to optimize the Armamentarium businesses are hiring “social media” resources who are supposed to be knowledgeable and have experience leveraging social media for business purposes. In other words these people are supposed to be experts with the technology, methods, and techniques available and aimed at helping people carry out their duties for optimum performance.

Based on what we see in the marketplace most “social media experts” working for specific companies are not leveraging the technology, methods, and techniques available for the purpose of helping people carry out their duties for optimum business performance. Instead there seems to be a total “mind meld” that social media is only about marketing and public relations.

Until management understands the dynamics and possibilities of social technology they will not be able to reach optimum Armamentarium for the organization benefit. Management will continue to sub-optimize the organizations performance because of a lack of knowledge and understanding about social technology. Limiting social technologies to marketing and public relations is like buying a computer and only using it for email. You simply are not maximizing the computers capabilities for other purposes. Get it?

What say you?
