And That’s The Way It Is

by Jay Deragon on 07/20/2009

Today we memorialize Walter Cronkite, the first broadcast news icon who made news human.  He was the “go to” news anchor on CBS News for two decades and covered some of the most important events in American history. From the assassination of JFK, Martin Luther King, The Vietnam War, Apollo’s landing on the moon and captured the minds and hearts of 20 million Americas nightly.  When Walter Cronkite came on the television my parents wanted it quite so they could hear his every word.

Each of his broadcast ended with “That’s the way it is” as he reported on the daily events happening globally. Walter Cronkite instilled a sentiment of trust and his style connected with millions of Americans as if he were their friend, neighbor or trusted relative.  Walter Cronkite personified and era in which broadcast was unbias and made news human. The conversational currency created trust and attention.

That’s The Way It Was

Today much of the mainstream media and created a distrust from the average American. Stories are bias and spun to meet a networks political, cultural or advertising objective.  Mainstream America is leaving broadcast news as its primary source of information because of the deterioration of trust. Consumers now trust their friends, associates and “community” to bring them the news, perspectives and opinions more than they do mainstream media.

If asked what he thought of all this social media Walter would likely have replied “If your referring to people reporting the news and sharing opinions well I’d simply say “That’s the way it is”.

The days when mainstream media holds the attention of mainstream America is the days that’s the  way it was.  Coining Walter Cronkite, Social media is now the way it is. Get it?

What say you?
