An Amazing Revolution?

by Jay Deragon on 08/16/2009

It still amazes me that most of the business people I talk to have not addressed the need for a social media strategy. Not having one is akin to not having a mobile device, not having an email and not knowing where your market is.

It is time for every business owner to wake up to the most significant shift in consumer behavior since the industrial era. This isn’t about hyping the latest fad or the newest management method this is about a revolution and revolutions can be disruptive to those not aware that one is happening.

Luis Suarez recently pointed out the ever popular Did You Know? series of YouTube videos as some of the most provocative, inspiring and eye opening clips to help folks understand a little bit the kind of significant impact social computing and social software are having not only in our workplace (And the corporate environment in general, for that matter!), but also in our own personal and individual lives.

The video below highlights the data representing the adoption of social technology and the significant shifts that are occurring as a result of this adoption.

Is The Groundswell Exploding?

When a groundswell explodes what happens is that the bottom overtakes the top. The pace of the swell overrides the pace of all processes, audiences and subsequently it makes all business and institutional organizational models obsolete.

One day you’ll wake up and try to catch the groundswell but the problem is it can’t be caught rather it will catch you by surprise. Get it? Don’t believe it? Watch the video below and ask yourself what are the implications and if not amazed then you missed the revolution.

At 51 years old I find it an amazing time in history and I am blessed to be able to not only witness it but be part of it. Maybe now you’ll understand why I write about it everyday of the week 365 days a year. It is simply amazing!

What say you?

Great video but it does not go far enough to project into the future. Most of the functions of corporations will soon be done in social media. New corporations will emerge as social media. A new currency will arise….

I think the impact of social media is going to hit any company in the marketing department first, sales second and the rest will fall in line. Today, social media is being driven by the curiosity-newness. Let’s face it, it hasn’t been around long enough for someone to say this is the new channel of communication.

What I find disturbing (and I’ve said this in my articles) is the uncanny parallel between social media and the dot com bubble. For any such activity to last it must have a sustainable model. I just think the model is still being prototyped.
